Omar Jimenez was led away in handcuffs while he was live on air early on Friday. His cameraman and producer were also detained, apparently because they did not move on when told. They were released without charge. Minnesota governor Tim Walz has apologized, describing the incident as “unacceptable”. CNN said the arrests violated the constitution.
Mr. Jimenez was in Minneapolis, reporting on the third night of violent protests over the death of George Floyd. On Tuesday a video emerged, showing a police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck, despite him saying he could not breathe.
CNN journalist Josh Campbell is also on the ground in Minneapolis, not far from where CNN reporter Omar Jimenez and his team were arrested by officers early this morning. They have since been released.
Speaking to Campbell earlier, CNN anchor John Berman pointed out that Jimenez is black and Latino, and Campbell is white, though he said he did not know whether race played a factor in Jimenez’s arrest.
