Russian PM Mikhail Mishustin said on Thursday that he tested positive for coronavirus and will self-isolate to protect other cabinet members.
“I have just learned that the test on the coronavirus I took was positive,” Mishustin said in a video meeting with President Vladimir Putin.
I have to observe self-isolation and follow the orders of doctors. This is necessary to protect my colleagues,” he said, promising to be in constant contact “on all the main issues.”
He suggested that First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov takes his place as an “acting” prime minister.
“What is happening to you now can happen to anyone,” Putin reassured him in the televised meeting.
“I hope that you stay able to work and will actively participate” in government decision-making, he said.
“Without your opinions and your participation these decisions will not be made,” Putin told Mishustin, wishing him a quick recovery.
President Vladimir Putin has extended the national “non-working” month through May 11 as Russia continued to see sharp daily rises in new coronavirus infections in recent days. Moscow’s coronavirus lockdown has also been extended until May 11.
Moscow is setting up 44 temporary hospitals that will treat up to 10,000 coronavirus patients, deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov said.
Residents of the Moscow region will be required to wear masks in public places, the governor of the region surrounding the capital said.
The opening of Russia’s new Orthodox mega-cathedral dedicated to the Armed Forces has been indefinitely postponed due to the coronavirus, Interfax reported. The cathedral was originally scheduled to open to mark the 75th anniversary of the Soviet victory over the Nazis on May 9.
